Someone much wiser than I once said; “Life is a rich tapestry, enjoy it all”.
In order for us to truly make progress in life we must recognise that our perspective is ours and ours alone. Doing consultancy, I sometimes meet people who have very strong beliefs and opinions. Having strong beliefs, values and opinions in itself can be a very good thing so long as it is tempered with the understanding that these have been formed through the teachings of others, environment and via your 5 senses.
Your view of the world is a combination of your brain’s interpretation of the visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, gustatory and olfactory. Your brain then creates thoughts, resulting in feelings/emotions. This world is unique to you.
During this Holiday Season, if you find yourself in a ‘debate’ (perhaps with a family member), please consider that they are voicing their opinion from their world view….which might be different from yours. This does not mean it is wrong – it’s just different.
So, the next time you are about to lecture someone on what ‘is’ or ‘is not’, please start your sentence with the demonstration of appreciation for others – “From my perspective…….”
It may save friendships and gain new respect.
