Do you manage or lead?

“A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.” —Lao Tzu

Not everyone attains the title ‘Manager’ in their career or life. However, every one of us can live up to the mantle ‘Leader’ when ever we choose. In my experience, a business full of leaders will survive and thrive, whilst a business with a manager and no leadership will struggle. leadership-styles

Often, training courses and books will talk of management and leadership as one in the same, but there are some fundamental differences:-

  • Leaders ask questions – Managers give answers
  • Leaders highlight and question potential for improvement – Managers point out mistakes
  • Leaders credit their teams for success – Managers look for credit for their team’s success
  • Leaders take responsibility for errors – Managers look to apportion blame for errors
